Digital watch display faded or missing segments
A faint, patchy or partially-dead LCD looks terminal, but most of the time it isn't the LCD at all. Three different problems produce "faded display" symptoms, and two of them are fixable at home.
Missing or intermittent segments → the zebra strip. The display connects to the circuit board through a soft strip of conductive rubber (striped like a zebra, hence the name). Over decades it oxidizes and loses contact, and segments drop out — often more after a knock, sometimes coming back when you press the case. The fix is undramatic: open the watch, remove the module, clean both the strip and the board's contact pads with isopropyl alcohol, reseat everything with even pressure. This revives more "dying" displays than any other repair.
Uniformly dark, low-contrast, hard-to-read display → the polarizer. The thin film on top of the LCD glass degrades with sun and age, and the whole display goes grey and washed out. Polarizer replacement is a documented, cheap repair: peel the old film, clean the adhesive residue patiently, lay down a new polarizer sheet. Fiddly, reversible on a donor first if you're nervous, and the before/after is dramatic.
A dark blob with soft edges that grows over months → LCD bleed. This one is the real loss — the crystal layer's seal has failed. The honest verdict and the lookalikes are in the LCD bleed guide.
Before opening anything, rule out the boring causes: a weak battery dims LCDs (segments fade under load — try the light button and watch the digits), and cold does too (an LCD in a freezing car goes sluggish and faint, and recovers warm).
Quick triage: patchy = strip, uniformly grey = polarizer, growing blob = bleed, fades with the backlight = battery.
