How do I open a stuck watch case back?

How do I open a stuck watch case back?

A case back that won't budge is where most battery changes go wrong — the damage rarely comes from the stuck back itself, but from the improvised tool that slips. The right technique depends entirely on which of the three back types you're fighting.

Three watch case back types: snap-off, screw-down, screw-plate

Snap-off backs (a small notch on the rim): the mistake is prying with a pocket knife at a random point. Use a proper case knife or a thin stiff blade at the notch only — it exists because that's the designed entry point. Work the blade in with a rocking motion, not brute force. If it's really welded shut by an old gasket, a drop of isopropyl alcohol around the seam and ten minutes of patience loosens dried gasket grease. Protect the case sides with masking tape before you start; slips happen to everyone.

Screw-down backs (six notches around the rim): try a rubber friction ball first — press firmly and twist counterclockwise. It's shockingly effective and can't scratch anything. If the ball fails, a proper three-prong case wrench sized to the notches is the next step; a one-size "adjustable" wrench held loosely is how notches get chewed up. Grip the watch in a case holder or a vise with soft jaws, not your fingers — you need both hands on the wrench.

Screw-plate backs (four tiny screws): stuck here means stuck screws. Use the correct size driver (Casio screws are small JIS/Phillips — a worn or oversized tip strips them instantly), press down hard, turn slowly. A stripped screw head turns a ten-minute job into an afternoon; if the driver starts to slip, stop immediately and get a fresh, exact-size tip before the head is ruined.

When to stop: if the back is visibly corroded shut, if a screw head is already stripped, or if the watch has real value to you — a watchmaker opens stuck backs daily with tools that cost more than the watch. Paying for ten minutes of their time beats explaining a cracked case back to yourself forever.

Once it's open: the battery swap, and note the date somewhere you'll find it again.
