G-Shock Tough Solar battery guide: charging, low battery and the CTL cell
Solar G-Shocks confuse people at exactly two moments: when the display says the charge is low, and when the rechargeable cell finally ages out. Both have clean answers.
How it actually works: the dial hides a solar panel that charges a small rechargeable cell — usually a CTL1616 or CTL1025 (lithium-titanium). It is not a normal battery; it's closer to a tiny power bank that the watch tops up with light. Healthy ones run the watch for months in darkness.
When the low indicator shows, the watch isn't dying — it's hungry. Charge it properly: face the dial toward bright light. Direct sunlight through a window is the realistic fast lane (hours, not minutes); indoor room lighting is a trickle that may never outrun the watch's own consumption. Habits that starve solar watches: living under a sleeve, resting face-down on a desk, and drawer storage. A monthly windowsill afternoon keeps a stored solar G-Shock permanently topped.
Heat warning: don't charge it on a car dashboard or in intense summer sun behind glass for hours — heat ages the cell and the resin. Bright, not baking.
When the CTL cell itself ages (typically after many years: charge no longer holds, low indicator returns within days), it can be replaced like any watch battery — BUT:
The trap this guide exists for: never put a normal CR1616 in place of a CTL1616. Same size, completely different chemistry. A CR cell is not rechargeable; the solar circuit will try to charge it anyway, which at best kills it fast and at worst makes it vent or leak inside a watch you like. If the shop only has CR in the drawer, walk out. The correct CTL cell costs a little more and is the entire point.
Recording the change date matters double here — a CTL that needs replacing again within a year or two is telling you something about the charging habits or the panel, not the cell.
