How do I turn off the hourly chime on a Casio?
The polite beep at the top of every hour is the hourly time signal — SIG on most displays — and it has interrupted more meetings than any other watch feature. Turning it off takes five seconds once you know it lives in the alarm screen, not the settings.
The standard way: press the bottom-left MODE button until you reach the alarm screen (AL or an alarm time shows). On that screen, press the bottom-right button repeatedly — it cycles through the combinations: alarm on, alarm + signal on, signal only, everything off. Watch the indicators: the chime is off when the SIG marker (or a small :00 / bell icon, depending on the module) disappears. Exit with MODE and enjoy the silence.
On three-button models like the F-91W family, the same toggle usually lives on the other button — in the alarm screen, the top or side button cycles the alarm/signal states. Same principle: cycle until the signal indicator is gone.
Why it "turned itself on": it didn't, exactly — a battery change resets many modules to factory defaults, and on plenty of Casio modules the factory default has the hourly signal enabled. If the beeping continues with SIG off, you're hearing an alarm, not the chime — check the alarm time isn't set to something on the hour, and disarm it in the same screen.
