Lost the tiny spring during a Casio battery change? Here's what to do
It happened in half a second: you lifted the module, something small and golden pinged off the desk, and now the internet is telling you your watch will never beep again. Mostly true, fully fixable. Here's the situation.
What that spring does: the alarm sound doesn't come from the module — it comes from a piezo disc glued to the inside of the case back. The tiny coil spring is the only electrical bridge between the module and that disc. No spring, no circuit, no beep. The watch otherwise runs perfectly, which is why people sometimes don't notice for months.
First: the search. The spring is usually gold or silver colored, a few millimeters long, and it doesn't bounce far — it clings. Run a magnet inside a plastic bag slowly over the desk and floor (bag keeps the catch visible), check your sleeves and lap first, and look inside the case itself; springs often just fall over sideways next to their hole.
If it's truly gone, in order of sanity:
- Replacement spring packs — assorted watch piezo springs are sold absurdly cheap online in packs of dozens. Search "casio alarm spring" or "watch piezo contact spring". One pack covers every future accident.
- A donor module — for common modules a broken donor watch costs pocket money and includes the spring, plus spare buttons and screws.
- Improvised bridges (a rolled sliver of aluminum foil in the spring hole, a trimmed spring from a clicky pen) — they can work, but foil shifts and pen springs are usually too stiff and can stress the piezo. Fine as a test, not as a fix.
Where it goes back: the small hole or post near the module's edge — there's usually a matching contact dot on the case back. Drop it in vertically, close the back gently, and test the beep with the button tone before you screw everything down.
The prevention habit: open watches inside a shallow white tray. Every spring that ever launches lands in the tray, visible. Cost: one takeout container lid.
